Almondvale has top ramsBy Alison Carmichael (The Rural, Wagga)Almondvale Bond Stud, Urana will offer a line-up of rams in top condition showing great carcass qualities and heavy cutting fleeces at their 16th annual ram sale on Wednesday, September 10. Many producers are looking to rebuild their flocks after selling off during the drought and these Almondvale rams have shown resilience and toughness throughout the dry season making them an excellent start to rebuilding a flock. Bond sheep are invaluable as a self-replacing flock and with the issue of introducing disease when restocking, this is where the breed comes into its own. Almondvale are in a protected ovine Johnes disease zone, giving them the advantage of being able to sell anywhere. Stud principals Peter and Paul Routley said clients have continued to receive excellent results from progeny of Almondvale rams, receiving good returns from wether lambs after two shearings. Almondvale topped the Elders section on July 4 at the Melbourne wool sales for their AAAFX wool. It was valued at 351 cents and made 559c/kg. An exciting addition to the Almondvale stud is taking place with the development of a white suffolk stud. The first rams will be up for sale at the 2004 annual Almondvale sale, and a display of the first year’s progeny can be seen this year. Paul Routley said the white suffolks have been introduced to complement the bonds and to accommodate the demand by prime lamb producers. Furthermore, Almondvale have invested in a new Prattley sheep yard complex which will be available for inspection on sale day. Representatives from Prattley’s will be on hand to answer questions and give advice to visitors. Rams will be penned by 10.30am, luncheon at 12.30pm. Almondvale welcomes both new and existing clients plus visitors to their 2003 sale to view not only the bond sale rams, but also the new Prattley sheep complex and the first year progeny of their white suffolk stud venture. Agents for Almondvale bond ram sale are Elders VP stud stock and Harper Trevaskis, Lockhart.
